You'll learn how to: Start and stop a meeting recording, handle OS permission prompts, and monitor the recording on screen.
Time: 5 minutes.
Prereqs: Nynch Listener installed and signed in. Microphone and screen permissions granted.
Before you start
Decide which recording mode you need.
- Remote call (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, phone): choose this if you're on a video call or phone line. Listener captures system audio (the other person's voice) plus your microphone (optional).
- In-person (1-on-1 meeting, interview): choose this if you're in the same room. Listener captures only your microphone.
See Recording modes: remote vs. in-person for details.
Step 1: Open Nynch Listener
Click the Nynch icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner, next to the clock).
The Listener window opens showing the recording screen.
Step 2: Choose your recording mode
At the top or in the main controls, select Remote call or In-person.
This choice determines what Listener captures:
- Remote call: system audio + optional microphone.
- In-person: microphone only.
Step 3: Enter a meeting title
In the Title field, enter a name for this meeting. Examples: "Product Planning Session", "Customer Call - Acme Corp", "All-Hands".
Listener suggests a title from your synced calendar if available. You can keep it or edit it.
Step 4: Click Start or Record
Click the Start or Record button.
If you chose Remote call, the OS shows a screen/tab picker dialog asking "Share your screen" or "Share a tab". Do NOT share your screen. Instead, tick the checkbox next to "Share audio" and click Share. This lets Listener capture the call audio without showing your screen to anyone.
If you chose In-person, the OS may ask to use your microphone. Click Allow.
Once permissions are granted, the recording starts and the screen shows a live timer, a pulsing red record indicator, and controls to Pause and Stop & Send.
Step 5: During your meeting
The recording runs automatically in the background. If you need to:
- Pause the recording: click Pause. The timer stops. The talk time (only actual speech, not paused time) is counted toward your limits.
- Resume: click Resume after pausing.
- Stop and upload: click Stop & Send when your meeting ends.
You can minimize Listener. It keeps recording in the system tray.
Step 6: Stop and upload
Click Stop & Send.
Listener stops recording and begins uploading the audio file to Nynch. A progress indicator shows the upload status.
Once the upload completes, the app shows a confirmation message. The local recording file is deleted from your device automatically (once confirmed in Nynch).
Step 7: Find your transcript
- In Nynch web, go to People.
- Select a contact or open Recent Activity.
- Look for the Meetings section. Your new transcript appears there with speaker diarization, action items, and AI summary.
The transcript lands in Nynch within a few seconds of upload.
If something goes wrong
- Symptom: "I clicked Start but no screen/tab picker appeared." → Fix: The picker may appear behind the Listener window. Click the Listener icon in the taskbar to bring it to front. Try clicking Start again if needed.
- Symptom: "The screen picker appeared but I don't see a 'Share audio' checkbox." → Fix: You may have accidentally clicked "Share screen" instead. Cancel and try again. Look for the prompt that says "Share audio" or has a checkbox for audio. See Grant microphone and screen permissions.
- Symptom: "Recording started but I don't hear myself or the other person." → Fix: Listener captures audio but doesn't play it back to you through the app. The other person's audio is being recorded even if Listener is silent. Check Troubleshoot Listener not capturing audio if the upload shows zero duration.
- Symptom: "I paused the recording by mistake. Can I resume and will it count?" → Fix: Yes. Click Resume and the recording continues. Paused time does NOT count toward your free-tier limits. Only active speech time counts.
- Symptom: "The upload is taking a long time." → Fix: Large files or slow internet can make uploads slow. Keep Listener open and connected to the internet. If it stalls, see Retry a failed Listener recording.
- Symptom: "I stopped recording but the upload never started." → Fix: Check your internet connection. If Listener shows a failed upload in the Recordings list, click Retry. See Retry a failed Listener recording.
After your first recording
- Check the transcript in Nynch web. Go to People > Meetings to see the automated analysis.
- Optional. Set up auto-detect for future meetings. See Auto-detect and record meetings.
- Understand free-tier limits. See Listener free tier and limits.
