Add an action item or commitment

You'll learn how to: Create an action item (a task with a due date and optional priority) linked to a deal, a contact, or standalone.

Time: 30 seconds.

What action items are for

Action items are the bridge between intent ("I should email Sarah next Wednesday") and execution ("Today's Activity tab is showing me Sarah's email card on Wednesday"). They live on:

  • The Today screen's Activity section on their due date.
  • The linked deal canvas (under "Next activity" or activity timeline).
  • The linked contact's activity timeline.
  • The weekly Actions grid as a tally entry.

Add one when creating a deal

The most common path. Inside the Create New Opportunity dialog:

  1. Click Add a next activity.
  2. The inline action-item card expands. Fill in:
    • Title (placeholder: "What needs to happen next?")
    • Due date (with quick buttons Tomorrow / 1 Week).
    • Priority (High / Medium / Low, default Medium).
    • Optional description (additional context).
  3. Save the deal. The action item lands automatically.

See Create your first opportunity for the full deal-creation flow.

Add one from a contact

  1. Open the contact profile.
  2. Find the activity timeline section.
  3. Click + Add action item (or + Add commitment, depending on workspace terminology).
  4. Fill the same fields. The action item is automatically linked to the contact.

Add one from a deal

  1. Open the deal canvas.
  2. The Check Fit tab or the activity sidebar has an + Add next activity action.
  3. Fill the same fields. Linked to the deal and (if there's a primary contact) to that contact as well.

Add one from Today

Standalone action items (not linked to any record) can be added from the Today screen:

  1. Today > Activity section.
  2. + New action item at the top of the section.
  3. Fill the fields. Skip the entity link.

What happens after

  • On the due date, the action item appears on Today's Activity section.
  • Status chip updates as the date approaches: Upcoming -> Due soon -> Due today -> Overdue.
  • Tick it complete from the card. Completed items move to a "done today" tally.
  • If linked to a deal / contact, the activity timeline records the creation and completion.

Quick due-date shortcuts

The date picker on the action-item card has:

  • Tomorrow (now + 1 day).
  • 1 Week (now + 7 days).
  • Custom date via the calendar picker.

These cover most cases. For longer horizons, type the date.

If something goes wrong

  • Symptom: "+ Add action item action isn't on the contact profile." → Fix: Some profile templates hide it. Try the deal canvas or Today screen instead, or use the more-actions menu on the profile.
  • Symptom: "I added an action item with a past due date by mistake." → Fix: Open the action item (from Today's Activity section or the linked record), edit the due date forward.
  • Symptom: "The action item appears twice on Today." → Fix: It's linked to both a deal and the deal's primary contact, so Today shows it from both contexts. Tick complete once; both disappear.
  • Symptom: "Item doesn't appear on Today even though the due date is today." → Fix: Today's Activity section refreshes when you open Today. Refresh the page once if it's still missing.
