You'll learn how to: Change which contact is the deal's primary, while keeping the old primary on the committee.
Time: 20 seconds.
Prereqs: The deal has at least one stakeholder on the committee besides the primary.
When this matters
- The original primary contact left the company / changed roles, and the Champion is taking over the buying conversation.
- A higher-level stakeholder (e.g. the CFO) stepped in and is now the main signer.
- The deal evolved and the actual decision-maker turns out to be different than you originally thought.
You want this change reflected on the deal so that everywhere the "primary" shows (kanban card, dashboards, Today nudges), the right person appears.
Steps
- Open the deal canvas (click the card on Revenue board).
- Click the Map People tab (tab 3 of 5).
- Find the stakeholder you want to promote.
- On their row, click the Make Primary action (star icon or equivalent).
- The promotion happens immediately:
- The selected stakeholder becomes the deal's primary contact.
- The previous primary moves to the committee with their previous role (or a default role if they didn't have one).
- The deal's title updates if it was the auto-generated "Deal with <previous name>" format.
- The kanban card now shows the new primary's name.
A toast confirms the swap.
What changes downstream
- Kanban / List / Orbit views show the new primary.
- Reporting and Owner / pipeline metrics still belong to the deal, not the primary, so they're unaffected.
- The previous primary is still part of the committee; their engagement bar still updates with their activity.
- Activity timeline records the swap with a "Primary changed from X to Y" entry.
- AI suggestions about the deal (drafts, prep briefings) start using the new primary as the focal contact.
Reversing the swap
Same flow. On the Map People tab, find the previous primary (now a committee member), click Make Primary on their row. The current primary moves back to committee.
The activity timeline shows every swap.
Don't promote randomly
The primary contact is who Nynch grounds AI drafts and meeting prep around. Frequent unnecessary swapping confuses both you and the AI. Swap when it reflects a real change in the deal, not just because someone replied to an email.
If something goes wrong
- Symptom: "Make Primary action isn't there." → Fix: A primary contact must already be set on the deal first. Set one on the Check Fit tab (or via the deal-creation dialog) and then Make Primary appears on every other stakeholder.
- Symptom: "I swapped but the kanban card still shows the old name." → Fix: Refresh once. The board caches the previous state for a few seconds.
- Symptom: "Swap changed the deal title and I want it back." → Fix: Click the title on the canvas to edit it inline. The auto-rename only fires when the title was "Deal with <old name>". Custom titles aren't touched.
- Symptom: "I want to promote but the candidate isn't on the committee yet." → Fix: Add them as a stakeholder first via + Add Stakeholder. After they're on the committee, the Make Primary action appears on their row.
