Troubleshoot Listener Not Capturing Audio

You'll learn how to: Diagnose and fix common audio capture issues in Nynch Listener.

Time: 5 minutes.

Prereqs: Nynch Listener installed and attempting a recording.

Common audio capture problems

No system audio captured in Remote call mode

The issue: You're recording a call (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet) in Remote call mode, but the recording contains no audio or only your voice.

Why this happens: You must explicitly allow Listener to capture system audio. When Listener starts a Remote call recording, your OS shows a screen-sharing permission prompt. You must tick the box next to "Share audio" or grant audio capture permission.

Fix:

  1. Start a new Remote call recording.
  2. When the OS prompts you to select which screen or window to share, look for a checkbox labeled Share audio, Share system audio, or Include audio.
  1. Make sure it is ticked. If it's already ticked, un-tick and tick it again to ensure it's enabled.
  2. Click Share or Start to continue.

If you missed this step in a recording that already failed, start a new recording and be sure to enable audio share this time.

No microphone audio captured

The issue: Listener is recording but capturing no microphone audio, or microphone audio is very faint or muted.

Why this happens: Listener does not have microphone permission, the microphone is muted at the OS level, or your microphone is not set as the active device.

Fix:

On Windows:

  1. Click Start and open Settings (Windows key + I).
  2. Go to Privacy & security > Microphone.
  3. Make sure the Microphone toggle is On.
  4. Scroll down to App permissions and find Nynch Listener in the list.
  5. Make sure the toggle next to Nynch Listener is On.
  6. Restart Listener and try recording again.

If Nynch Listener is not in the list, it may not have requested permission yet. Start a recording and look for a permission prompt from Windows. Click Allow when you see it.

Recording shows zero duration after upload

The issue: A recording uploaded successfully, but the transcript shows "Duration: 0 seconds" or "Duration: 0 minutes".

Why this happens: Listener did not capture any audio during the recording, usually because permissions were not granted or audio input was muted.

Fix:

  1. Check the troubleshooting steps above for missing system audio and microphone audio.
  2. Make sure your microphone is not muted at the device level (check physical mute buttons on your headset or keyboard).
  3. Make sure your microphone is selected as the active input device in your OS sound settings (Settings > Sound > Input).
  4. Try a test recording with just your microphone to confirm it's working. Speak clearly for 30 seconds, then stop and upload.

If the test recording also shows zero duration, your microphone may not be working. Try a different microphone or contact your device support.

Transcription is very slow or hasn't started

The issue: You uploaded a recording an hour ago, but it still hasn't transcribed.

Why this happens: Deepgram is busy, your recording is very long, or there's a server issue.

Fix:

  1. Wait. Transcription can take several minutes for longer recordings (e.g., a 60-minute call may take 5-10 minutes to transcribe).
  2. Make sure you're signed into Nynch and check People > Meetings. The transcript may have appeared without a notification.
  3. Check Listener's Recordings list. If the recording is still there, the upload may still be in progress. Don't close Listener yet.
  4. If more than 30 minutes have passed, see Retry a failed Listener recording to retry.

If you have a free Deepgram account with credits remaining, the delay is likely just processing time, not a quota issue.

If something goes wrong

  • Symptom: "I granted microphone permission but Listener still doesn't capture audio." → Fix: Restart your computer. OS permissions sometimes require a restart to take full effect. After restarting, try recording again.
  • Symptom: "The error says 'Audio input device not found'." → Fix: Make sure a microphone (built-in, USB, or Bluetooth) is plugged in and turned on. In your OS sound settings, confirm that a microphone is listed and selected as the active input device.
  • Symptom: "My video call had audio but Listener captured nothing or only one speaker." → Fix: Make sure you ticked Share audio when the OS screen-share dialog appeared at the start of the recording. If you missed it, the recording won't have system audio. Re-record the call or a portion of it with audio sharing enabled.
