You'll learn how to: Create a free Deepgram account, get your API key, and paste it into Nynch Listener to unlock unlimited transcriptions.
Time: 5 minutes.
Prereqs: Nynch Listener installed and signed in. A Deepgram account (free tier gives you $200 in credits).
Why add a Deepgram key?
By default, Listener grants every user 70 minutes of free transcriptions per month, plus one grace recording up to 120 minutes. Once you exceed those limits, you need a Deepgram API key to keep transcribing.
A free Deepgram account gives you $200 in credits, which typically covers hundreds of hours of transcription. The key is stored on your device only. Nynch never sees it.
Step 1: Create a free Deepgram account
- Go to deepgram.com.
- Click Sign up (top-right).
- Enter your email and password, then click Create account.
- Deepgram sends you a confirmation email. Click the link to verify your account.
- Log in to Deepgram and accept the free tier credit offer ($200 USD).
Step 2: Get your API key
- In Deepgram, click your avatar (bottom-left) and select API Keys.
- Under "Keys", click Create a new key (or + New key).
- Name the key something you recognize, like "Nynch Listener" or "My Listener App".
- Click Create key.
- Deepgram displays your new key in full. Copy it to your clipboard.
Step 3: Paste the key into Listener
- Open Nynch Listener.
- Click the menu icon (three horizontal lines, usually top-left or top-right) or open Settings.
- Look for a Transcription or API Keys section.
- Paste your Deepgram API key into the Deepgram API Key field.
- Click Save or Apply.
Listener stores the key on your device only. You're now set to transcribe unlimited recordings.
Change or remove your key
- Open Listener Settings.
- Go to Transcription or API Keys.
- To replace the key, paste a new one and click Save.
- To remove the key, clear the field and click Save. Listener will fall back to the free tier (70 minutes per month plus one grace recording).
If something goes wrong
- Symptom: "I signed up for Deepgram but don't see the $200 credit." → Fix: Check your Deepgram inbox for a welcome email with the credit offer. You may need to accept it in the console. If you still don't see it, contact Deepgram support.
- Symptom: "The API key I pasted says 'Invalid key' in Listener." → Fix: Make sure you copied the full key from Deepgram without extra spaces or line breaks. Try copying and pasting it again. If Deepgram shows the key as a masked string (dots or asterisks), click it to reveal the full key, then copy.
- Symptom: "I added my key but Listener still says I'm out of free transcription." → Fix: Restart Listener for the key change to take effect. Close the app completely and reopen it.
- Symptom: "Deepgram API key field is grayed out in Listener settings." → Fix: Check that you're signed into Listener with your Nynch account. If you're on the free trial or a restricted plan, contact Nynch support to confirm your plan allows custom API keys.
